Weidmann Whitely Ltd / Otley
23rd September 2016
(AM – start time to be confirmed)

PITA, in combination with the British Association of Paper Historians (BAPH), is delighted to announce a forthcoming visit to Pool Paper Mills, operated by Weidmann Whitely Ltd., in Pool-in-Wharfedale, near Leeds.

Paper has been made in the area since at least 1761, although the current site is much more recent and dates from 1886, when it was first rented by the Whiteley family to produce pressboards for the local textile industry. The family purchased the mill in 1919, and ran it until 1981 when Weidmann International Corporation purchased the company. Today the mill’s output divides into two separate ranges of Speciality board products: Commercial products (press- and file-boards and embroidery board) and Technical products (encompassing numerous grades including calender bowl, shoe cutting, book spine and abrasive backing boards, among others). In addition they have made and marketed Electrical Insulation Presspapers for in excess of 90 years, for which they have a worldwide reputation, the grades being used widely in distribution transformers.

The mill’s output is niche and highly technical in specification, and both BAPH and PITA are grateful to the management of Pool Paper Mills for providing this rare opportunity for a limited number of our members to visit the site, tour the plant and view the production machinery.

Numbers are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so please book early. For further details and to reserve your place, please contact the PITA Office (0300 3020 150 / This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
