Distribution... Spain
Portugal
Chile

Fibre Types... The fibre types are based predominately on a single species, that is Eucalyptus globulus, although small amounts of other Eucalyptus species may be present.
There may be some variation in pulp properties, depending on whether the pulp is obtained from northern or southern Iberia and also if the pulpwood is from a natural forest or a plantation, which can affect wood age for pulping.
Almost all E. globulus pulpwood is from plantations.

Fibre Properties... Fibre Length 0.9-1 mm
Fibre Width 14-16 µ
Wall Thickness 4-4.5 µ
Fibre Coarseness 80-90 micro g/m

  Typical Pulp Properties...
Bleached ECF and some unbleached pulps are available. E. globulus is generally regarded as being the hardest of the eucalyptus pulps to refine. At the same Schopper Reigler wetness, E.globulus pulps yield the highest strength, but the lowest opacity. The more northerly eucalyptus wood harvested (eg Northern Spain) tends to be the most difficult of the eucalyptus species to refine, but can yield the highest strength with the least vessel picking tendency. The age of the wood when harvested affects the refining rate, older wood being more resistant to refining.

  Typical Uses...

Compared to most other hardwoods, eucalyptus pulps tend to give a higher bulk, tear strength, opacity and formation(due to finer fibres). In all grades of uncoated and coated printing and writings, eucalyptus globulus is used for opacity, formation and smoothness, up to 100% of the furnish in some cases. It can also be used in towelling and tissue grades without refining to achieve bulk and air permeance. E. globulus in comparison to other eucalyptus species finds applications in speciality papers, where development of tensile strength, smooth surface and absorbency characteristics are needed.
