  What is it for?...

In a Stock Preparation system there are often High Density Cleaners after the pulper. These are to remove heavy contaminants such as pieces of bale wire and larger contaminants that have passed the pulper screen plate. There are also sometimes Low density cleaners in a Stock Prep system although these are uncommon as this function is normally performed by the Approach Flow cleaners in the Approach Flow system.
  Related Terminology...

Heavy Weight Cleaner: This is a term for a cleaner that removes dirt denser than the stock at any consistency.
High Consistency Cleaner: This is a term for a cleaner that runs at a high consistency and is generally the same equipment as a high density cleaner. Another term often used for this equipment is Coarse Cleaner

  Technical Information..

High density cleaners (sometimes referred to as Coarse Cleaners) are normally vertical in design. The stock enters the cleaner tangentially in the head piece. This causes the stock to rotate in the cleaner at high speed. This rotational action causes the parts in the suspension that are denser to be pushed out to the walls of the cleaner. These contaminants will work their way down the walls of the cleaner where they are rejected by a junk trap valve arrangement. Coarse cleaners are generally found after the pulping system and are mostly run at higher consistencies (around 3%) depending on the following equipment. The efficiency of a coarse cleaner at removing small contaminants is compromised because of the higher consistency and larger diameters. Coarse cleaners often have wearing sections made of ceramic to increase the lifetime as they are subject to heavy wear. Often the reject valves need to be of a special design to handle the wear rates involved.
