Press Section monitoring is important to make sure the performance of the section remains consistent. Factors that need monitoring include Vibration analysis, Moisture content of the felt and sheet, Permeability of the felt and the Guiding of the felt. |
Press Fabrics: These are the press felts used to carry the sheet through the presses. Nip Pressure: This is the loading between two rolls. Edge Guides: These units control the run of the felt. ShoePress: This is an extended nip press. Draw: This is the tension between each section of the paper machine. Roll Hardness: Press rolls can have different hardness covers. |
![]() Typical Felt Life Graph |
During its lifetime a felt loses some permeability, hence the drop in performance of the suction box dewatering, but the void volume inside the felt means that the nip dewatering increases slightly as the felt carries more water. The permeability of a felt gives a good indication as to its condition. The characteristics can be monitored on the run using something like a Scanpro unit which is held against the felt. Vibration analysis is important on high speed modern machines. This can give early warnings about press roll covers being damaged or coming loose, also bearing failure can be a major problem necessitating a machine shut down; Moisture content is a critical factor when monitoring Press section effectiveness. Inline moisture meters traverse the web giving a moisture profile. The profile is important as it can identify possible wet streaks in the sheet which can be caused by blocked cleaning jets allowing the felt to blind up with fines, for example. |
