  General Information
Forming is the process by which a suspension of fibres in water is laid onto a wire mesh from which the water drains through leaving a mat of fibres which form the paper sheet. This can be a continuous process or, as in handmade paper, individual sheets. The first continuous paper machines used the Fourdrinier process, whereby the fibre suspension (the dilute stock) is supplied onto the wire through a narrow slot called the slice. Under the wire at this stage is a board called the Forming Board. This controls the initial rate of dewatering to allow a more random orientation of the fibres before they become fixed in the sheet. On the paper machine the whole unit is referred to as the Forming Table. Multi-ply machines for making boards have Formers, one for each layer or ply as they are called. The principal is the same as the Fourdrinier concept except that each layer has its own former and wire maintaining the integrity of the layer.
Forming takes place at the Wet End of the machine. The wire mesh is a continuous loop which is also called the Forming Fabric. As the fibre mat travels along the wire de-watering takes place using devices called table rolls and foils which are underneath the wire. Further along the wire there are vacuum boxes which continue to dewater the sheet before it separates from the wire and enters the Press Section.
