  What is it for?...

Once wood has arrived in untreated log form at the pulp mill it needs to be taken from the woodyard, de-barked and chipped into suitable chips sizes for the following process steps. Some Mechanical pulping processes such as the Groundwood process can use wood in small block or log form. Chemical processes generally require very uniform chips in order to keep a high efficiency in the pulping process. The Bark can be used for energy production.
  Related Terminology...

Debarking A process to remove the bark from the logs
Chipper A machine to turn the debarked logs into chips
Chip Storage The method of storing the chips once produced
Chip Screen Equipment used to classify the chips for further processing
Bark Press Equipment used to prepare the removed bark before burning

  Technical Information..

The process steps in the woodyard normally consist of log feed, debarking, Chipping and Chip Screening. The total yield of a Pulp mill can be affected by the efficiency of the woodyard and so Chipping and Chip storage need careful attention to ensure a constant quality of chips are fed to the pulp mill. Damage to the logs during the feeding, debarking and conveying process all affect the chip quality and therefore this process needs to be robust yet as gentle as possible in order to keep the plant yield high.
In colder locations de-icing is also sometimes required before the logs can be treated and sometimes a washing stage is used to remove larger debris that can cause accelerated wear of equioment in the subsequent process steps.
In parallel the bark that has been removed is pressed and used to generate energy for re-use in the process.
